The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has expressed confidence that construction of the proposed Volivo Bridge across the River Volta could commence before the end of 2026 or in the early months of 2027, following progress in the procurement process.
He disclosed that government had collaborated with its Japanese partners and project consultants to accelerate the preparatory arrangements, culminating in the opening of bids to pave the way for the selection of a construction contractor.
Speaking at the bid opening ceremony on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Mr Agbodza expressed optimism that the latest development would finally advance the long anticipated infrastructure project from its preparatory stages into actual construction.
“This will be the most beautiful engineering bridge piece on the landscape of Ghana. This process started somewhere 2015-2016. A full bidding process was carried out. We are hoping that towards the end of the year, early part of next year, actual construction work should be ready,” he said.
The Roads and Highways Minister explained that renewed cooperation with Japan had played an important role in expediting the administrative and technical procedures required to reach the latest procurement milestone.
He observed that the project had not originally been expected to reach the bid opening stage so soon, but sustained collaboration between the Ghanaian authorities, their Japanese counterparts and the consultants had helped shorten the processes leading to the commencement of contractor selection.
“We shouldn’t have been at this milestone yet, but working together with our Japanese counterparts and the consultants, we’ve been able to fast-track many of the processes leading to us having the opportunity to do the bid opening today,” he said.
Mr Agbodza also described the proposed bridge as an important representation of the longstanding diplomatic and development partnership between Ghana and Japan, expressing hope that its eventual construction would further demonstrate the strength of bilateral relations.
He urged the contractor who would eventually secure the contract to maintain a demanding work schedule and ensure that construction was completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The Minister assured that government would provide the necessary institutional and logistical support to facilitate the successful execution of the project, emphasising the importance of timely delivery.
