Inhabitants of Akyem Hemang, Gyampomani, Dome, Dwenase and adjoining communities in the Eastern Region have marched through the streets to press for justice over the alleged killing of Douglas Acheampong, aged 29, by military personnel.
The demonstrators, organised under the banner of the Concerned Youth of Akyem Hemang, undertook a ten kilometre trek on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, travelling from Akyem Hemang to Osino, where they are due to hand a petition to the District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa South.
The demonstration follows the alleged shooting of Douglas Acheampong from a very short distance by military personnel on August 26, 2026. The episode reportedly unfolded after soldiers detained an immigration officer from the community who was dressed in civilian clothing, whom they allegedly suspected of being an informant after observing him make a telephone call. The protesters maintain that Acheampong and several others tried to step in during the detention, and that this led to the alleged shooting.
Roughly forty police officers, drawn from the Anyinam, Kibi, Suhum and Abomosu commands, were stationed along the route to maintain order during the procession.
The marchers held placards conveying calls for the military to protect and not to kill, for a probe led by the President, for suspects to be investigated, identified and prosecuted, for an end to civilian killings, and for a firm stand against injustice.
The group is demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Acheampong’s death, together with accountability for those found responsible.
The images above match the protest closely, though the search tool does not display publication dates, so please confirm they were taken on September 29 before publishing. Two of the captions describe the victim as 28 years old, while the other two say 29, so I kept the age given in your text.
