The government has transferred GH¢6.1 million into the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely referred to as Mahama Cares, following directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama, according to Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Thursday, May 7, Mr Kwakye Ofosu revealed that the Controller and Accountant General had officially informed government authorities that the amount had been deducted and successfully transferred into the Fund in accordance with earlier instructions issued by the President to political appointees.

The contribution forms part of a broader effort initiated by President Mahama to mobilise financial support for the healthcare focused intervention programme. During the official introduction of the initiative last year, the President pledged to donate six months of his salary toward the Fund and subsequently encouraged all political appointees under his administration to contribute the equivalent of one month’s salary each.

In addition, the President directed that appointees who failed to comply with the initial deadline for asset declaration would forfeit three months of their salaries to support the Fund as part of measures aimed at reinforcing accountability and compliance within government.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that preparations are currently ongoing to facilitate the transfer of the remaining tranche of funds. According to him, the final payment will include deductions from appointees who defaulted on the President’s asset declaration directive.

The latest transfer is expected to strengthen the financial capacity of the Mahama Cares initiative as government intensifies efforts to support healthcare interventions and expand assistance for vulnerable citizens through the Fund.
