October is internationally acknowledged as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual observance is dedicated to increasing awareness about breast cancer, advocating for early detection, and providing support to those impacted by this condition.
To commemorate this year’s World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection through the Department of Gender, organized a Breast Cancer seminar and screening for the Ministry’s staff.
In a statement delivered on behalf of the Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, Madam Vera KariKari Bediako highlighted that available research indicates that 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ghana are already in advanced stages of the disease, primarily due to limited awareness, leading to reduced treatment success and a high mortality rate.
She emphasized the need for action to reverse these concerning statistics.
She encouraged staff to take advantage of the opportunity to undergo breast examinations.
Participants were also advised to incorporate regular exercise and increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables into their lifestyles.
