Ghana’s capital, Accra, has secured a place among the world’s leading destinations for nightlife, ranking 18th in Time Out’s 2026 list of the World’s Best Cities for Nightlife. The latest international ranking places the Ghanaian capital alongside some of the most prominent entertainment destinations across the globe and establishes it as one of Africa’s leading centres for after dark leisure, music and social activity.

The ranking was compiled following a worldwide survey involving more than 24,000 residents across 150 cities, with respondents asked to assess the quality of nightlife in their respective locations, its affordability, accessibility, sense of community and overall atmosphere. Time Out subsequently combined those responses with evaluations from its international network of city editors, cultural specialists and nightlife experts before producing the final ranking.

Accra’s 18th position places the city firmly within the global top 20 and makes it one of only two African destinations to feature among the highest ranked cities, with Johannesburg in South Africa occupying seventh position. Bangkok claimed the overall first position, followed by Berlin, New York City, Melbourne and São Paulo in the top five.

The findings also highlight the strong social character of Accra’s nightlife. About 75 percent of residents surveyed said they found it easy to establish a sense of community while going out in the city, while 65 percent described the capital as welcoming and friendly. In addition, 62 percent considered nightlife in Accra affordable, particularly when it comes to experiencing live music and enjoying drinks, while 56 percent gave favourable ratings to the overall quality of the city’s nightlife scene.

Accra’s established entertainment districts continue to play a central role in maintaining the city’s reputation. Osu remains one of the capital’s most recognisable nightlife centres, with long standing establishments including Republic Bar, Bloom Bar, Purple Pub and Front Back continuing to attract residents, visitors and members of the Ghanaian diaspora.

At the same time, the city’s nightlife landscape is expanding beyond its traditional centres as East Legon increasingly emerges as another major destination for evening entertainment. Time Out specifically highlighted venues such as Mad Club and Heritage Craft Brewery, while Enzo Accra and other newer establishments demonstrate the growing sophistication and commercial diversity of the capital’s entertainment industry.

The transformation is also being reflected in the variety of musical experiences available across the city. Although Afrobeats remains an important component of Accra’s entertainment identity, Time Out noted the growing influence of electronic music, alté culture and events centred around 1990s rhythm and blues. Venues and event organisers are consequently broadening their offerings, creating an increasingly diverse environment for both established performers and emerging cultural movements.

Time Out further observed that Accra’s nightlife is no longer concentrated around a small number of major venues. Instead, residents are increasingly moving between different entertainment districts and establishments, reflecting a broader shift towards bar hopping, specialised events and distinctive neighbourhood experiences.

The international recognition therefore provides further evidence of the growing importance of nightlife to Accra’s tourism, hospitality and cultural economy. With its combination of music, social interaction, restaurants, bars, clubs and locally rooted entertainment, the capital has developed a nightlife environment that continues to attract both domestic audiences and international visitors.

Accra’s inclusion at number 18 ultimately places Ghana’s capital among the world’s most prominent after dark destinations in 2026. More importantly, the ranking highlights the qualities that distinguish the city from many competing destinations, particularly its strong communal atmosphere, relative affordability, welcoming social culture and increasingly diverse entertainment offering.
