Medeama Sporting Club has set its sights on an ambitious campaign in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League, with the club’s Board Chairman, Dr Toni Aubynn, declaring that the Ghanaian champions are determined to compete for the continental title rather than merely participate in Africa’s premier club competition.

The Yellow and Mauve outfit earned the right to represent Ghana in the continent’s elite inter club tournament after capturing the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League crown, and the club’s leadership has now raised its ambitions considerably ahead of its Champions League campaign.

Medeama’s opening assignment will, however, present an immediate test of its continental credentials, with the Ghanaian champions drawn against Congolese powerhouse TP Mazembe in the preliminary stage of the competition.

The two sides are expected to meet later this month, with Medeama preparing for what promises to be a demanding encounter against one of Africa’s most established and decorated clubs.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Dr Aubynn said the club had moved beyond its previous objective of simply advancing far enough in the competition to secure the financial rewards associated with progression.

According to him, Medeama now intends to pursue the ultimate prize and use its continental campaign to enhance Ghana’s reputation while also bringing pride to the Western Region.

“In the past, we wanted to progress to the money zone, but now our aim is to win the cup itself by making Ghana proud and the people of the Western Region proud. Our target is to go for the kill,” he said.

The declaration represents a significant escalation in Medeama’s continental ambitions, particularly given the calibre of opposition awaiting the Ghanaian champions at the opening stage of the tournament.

Dr Aubynn acknowledged that TP Mazembe would constitute a formidable obstacle, describing the Congolese giants as an experienced and highly competitive side with considerable pedigree in African club football.

Medeama, however, does not intend to be intimidated by the reputation of its opponents. The club’s leadership believes its players have acquired sufficient continental experience through previous campaigns to compete effectively against more established opposition.

Although Dr Aubynn conceded that Medeama could enter the tie as the underdogs, he maintained that the Ghanaian champions would approach the contest with confidence and determination.

The club’s previous participation in continental competitions is expected to provide valuable experience as Medeama attempts to navigate what could be one of the most challenging preliminary round assignments.

The encounter with TP Mazembe will consequently provide an early indication of whether Medeama can transform its domestic success into meaningful continental progress.

Having secured the Ghana Premier League title, the Tarkwa based club now faces the dual challenge of defending its national status while establishing itself as a serious contender on the African stage.

Medeama is currently in Ivory Coast, where the squad is undergoing preparations for the upcoming football season and the demanding Champions League campaign that awaits.

The club’s preparations are being conducted against the backdrop of a clear objective from its leadership. Rather than treating continental football as an opportunity merely to gain experience or generate revenue, Medeama intends to compete with the conviction that it can ultimately challenge for African supremacy.

The preliminary encounter with TP Mazembe will therefore represent much more than the opening fixture of another continental campaign. It will be the first major examination of Medeama’s stated ambition to progress from Ghanaian champions to genuine contenders for the CAF Champions League crown.

For Ghanaian football supporters and followers of the Western Region club, the tie offers an opportunity to assess whether Medeama can build on its domestic triumph and establish a stronger presence among Africa’s leading clubs.

With the club already preparing in Ivory Coast and the preliminary round approaching, Medeama’s message is unequivocal: it is entering the 2026/27 CAF Champions League with the intention of competing for the trophy itself.
