Nana B Declares Ambitious Bid for NPP National First Vice Chairman Position, Citing 26 Years of Party Service and Grassroots Experience

Henry Nana Boakye, widely known within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) political tradition as Nana B, has formally announced his intention to contest the position of National First Vice Chairman of the party, setting the stage for another major internal contest as the NPP begins preparations to rebuild its political machinery ahead of the 2028 general election.

The declaration by Nana B introduces a significant development within the leadership structure of Ghana’s largest centre right political organisation, as the party continues its internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections and seeks to strengthen its grassroots structures, reconnect with supporters and develop a renewed strategy for a return to government.

In a statement directed to party executives, elders, patrons and members across the country, Nana B explained that his decision to seek the influential position was motivated by more than two decades of commitment to the NPP and a desire to contribute to the party’s institutional renewal.

He stated that after 26 years of active involvement in the party’s activities, his political journey had provided him with the experience, understanding and organisational knowledge required to support the strengthening of party structures, restore grassroots engagement and help position the NPP for electoral success in 2028.

The position of National First Vice Chairman is considered one of the most strategic offices within the NPP’s hierarchy because the holder plays a critical role in supporting the National Chairman, coordinating party administration and helping shape the direction of the organisation between elections.

The contest for the position is therefore expected to attract significant attention from party members because it comes at a crucial moment when the NPP is undertaking a major assessment of its electoral performance, internal structures and relationship with its traditional support base.

Nana B enters the race with a political profile built largely around grassroots mobilisation, youth organisation and party communication. His journey within the NPP began at the constituency level, where he served as a Polling Station Agent during the 2000 general elections in the then Manhyia Constituency.

That early experience placed him directly within the party’s electoral foundation, where polling station organisation and grassroots mobilisation remain central components of election success.

Over the years, he expanded his involvement within the party structure, serving as a Polling Station Chairman in Tarkwa Nsuaem and Oforikrom constituencies before taking on the role of Communications Officer for Oforikrom. He also contributed to constituency and regional campaign teams, gaining experience in political coordination and election strategy.

His political development was further strengthened through student and youth leadership roles. During his university years, Nana B served as President of the Tertiary Students Confederacy Network at both the University of Mines and Technology and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

TESCON, regarded as the intellectual and youth mobilisation wing of the NPP, has historically served as a pipeline for future party leaders, producing several politicians who later assumed national responsibilities within the party and government.

Nana B later served as Director of Events and Programmes for the NPP National Youth Wing before becoming National Youth Organiser, one of the most influential youth positions within the party.

His leadership experience also extended beyond Ghana’s borders, as he served as Vice Chairman of the International Young Democrat Union, an international network of centre right political youth organisations.

At the national level, Nana B has occupied several important roles within the NPP’s political architecture. He served as a member of the National Communications Team, contributing to the party’s public messaging and political communication strategies.

He was also involved in the party’s legal and electoral defence efforts, serving on the 2020 Presidential Election Petition Legal Team following the presidential election dispute brought before Ghana’s Supreme Court.

Additionally, he participated in the 2020 and 2024 National Campaign Teams, gaining direct involvement in nationwide electoral planning and campaign coordination.

Currently serving as the NPP National Organiser, Nana B has been part of some of the party’s highest decision making bodies, including the National Steering Committee, National Executive Committee and National Council.

His experience within these structures provides him with familiarity with party administration, internal decision making processes and national level political organisation.

He also served as Vice Chairman of the 2025 National Delegates Conference Planning Committee, a role that placed him at the centre of preparations for one of the party’s most important internal democratic exercises.

Political analysts believe the timing of Nana B’s declaration is significant because the NPP is entering a rebuilding phase after losing political power in the 2024 election. The party has since been engaged in internal discussions about how to restore voter confidence, strengthen constituency structures and address concerns that emerged during its time in government.

The 2028 election represents a major political objective for the NPP, which has alternated power with the National Democratic Congress since the return of constitutional democracy in 1993. Both major political parties have historically relied heavily on grassroots organisation, campaign structures and internal unity to secure electoral victories.

Nana B’s campaign message appears centred on these themes.

He has emphasised unity, organisational renewal and stronger connections between the national leadership and ordinary party members. According to him, a united party with a renewed sense of purpose will be better positioned to compete successfully in the next general election.

“With unity of purpose and renewed determination, we can reposition our party for victory in the 2028 general elections,” Nana B stated while appealing for the support, guidance and prayers of party members.

His declaration adds another layer of competition to the NPP’s internal leadership discussions and highlights the growing importance of experienced organisers as the party seeks to rebuild its political identity.

The coming months are expected to witness intense internal engagement as various candidates present their visions for the future direction of the party. The outcome of these contests will not only determine the composition of the NPP’s national leadership but could also influence the party’s broader strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.

For Nana B, the contest represents the culmination of a political journey that began at the grassroots level and progressed through youth leadership, communications, campaign management and national party administration.

His bid for National First Vice Chairman therefore carries both personal ambition and wider political significance, as the NPP searches for leaders capable of managing its renewal process and guiding the party toward another attempt at governing Ghana.
