Ghana national under-17 football team surrendered an early two goal advantage to settle for a dramatic 2 2 draw against Algeria national under-17 football team in their opening Group D encounter at the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations on Thursday evening.

The Black Starlets exploded into the contest at the Mohammed VI Football Academy and immediately imposed themselves on proceedings, displaying attacking intensity and composure that appeared to place them firmly on course for a commanding opening victory.

Gavi Yao opened the scoring in only the third minute after taking full advantage of a costly error from the Algerian goalkeeper. Ghana continued to dominate possession and maintain relentless pressure before extending their lead seven minutes later through Eric Gyamfi, whose brilliant long distance chip silenced spectators and left the Algerian defence exposed.

With a comfortable two goal advantage established inside the opening ten minutes, Ghana looked composed, confident, and firmly in control as they headed into halftime.

However, the momentum of the encounter shifted dramatically after the restart as Algeria emerged with renewed aggression and determination.

Adam Benali pulled one back in the 57th minute after connecting with a well delivered through pass from Mahdi Maghlout, giving the North Africans renewed belief.

Only three minutes later, Zaidi restored parity for Algeria, completing an impressive comeback and transforming the atmosphere of the contest.

Ghana were then handed a significant scare in the 67th minute when Algeria earned a penalty following sustained attacking pressure. Fortunately for the Black Starlets, Ilyas Grini blasted his effort over the crossbar, allowing coach Prosper Narteh Ogum and his side to remain level.

Both nations pressed aggressively in search of a winning goal during an entertaining closing period filled with attacking exchanges and nervous moments, yet neither side managed to produce the decisive breakthrough in a pulsating encounter.

The result leaves Ghana with a single point from their opening Group D fixture as the Black Starlets now shift focus toward a crucial upcoming showdown against Senegal national under-17 football team in their next match.
