Accra, March 3, 2026 — The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, according to provisional results from the Electoral Commission’s collation process.

Unconfirmed figures sighted from polling station tallies indicate that Baba Jamal secured a decisive majority of the votes cast in the constituency, defeating his main contender from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Baba Ali Yussif.

Provisional data suggest that the NDC candidate garnered approximately 63 percent of the valid votes cast, placing him comfortably ahead of the other candidates in the race. The Electoral Commission is yet to formally declare the certified final results, but trends from across the polling stations point to a clear victory for the NDC.

The by-election was conducted to fill the parliamentary vacancy in the Ayawaso East Constituency following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, earlier this year.

Voting across the constituency was generally described as peaceful, with party agents and election observers monitoring the process at various polling centres. Turnout figures are expected to be confirmed by the Electoral Commission once final collation is completed.

Following the release of the provisional figures, the NPP candidate is reported to have conceded defeat, congratulating Baba Jamal and expressing appreciation to supporters.

With this victory, Baba Jamal is expected to assume the parliamentary seat for Ayawaso East once the Electoral Commission completes the formal declaration process and gazettes the results.

Further updates are expected as the Electoral Commission finalises and officially announces the certified results.
