The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the fatal robbery of a 40 year old gold buyer at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region, although one of the suspects identified by investigators as the alleged leader of the group has died shortly after his arrest.
The victim, Seth Kobina, was shot in the chest when armed men reportedly stormed his gold buying shop at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He was subsequently transported to the Agona Nkwanta Hospital for emergency medical treatment, but medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Police investigations, including an examination of closed circuit television footage from the scene, subsequently led investigators to identify 29 year old Emmanuel Amponsah, also known as “Vandam”, as the alleged leader of the robbery gang.
Amponsah was arrested on Friday, August 21, at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta. According to the police, a search conducted after his arrest resulted in the recovery of a locally manufactured pistol and two live BB cartridges.
The suspect, however, reportedly became ill following his arrest and was transported to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for medical attention. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility. The police have not yet disclosed the circumstances or suspected cause of his death.
Investigators subsequently widened their operations and arrested three additional suspects within the Agona Nkwanta area. They have been identified as 47 year old Christopher Seyiri, also known as “Cross and Die”, 20 year old Bashiru Ibrahim and 30 year old Thomas Odoom, also known as “Wale”.
A fifth suspect, Isaac Quayeson, known by the alias “Last Burial”, was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region.
The police said a search of Quayeson’s residence resulted in the discovery of another locally manufactured pistol, three live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.
During the course of questioning, police investigators said Quayeson identified the late Amponsah as the individual who allegedly fired the shot that killed Seth Kobina during the robbery. He also reportedly identified Thomas Odoom as one of the persons captured by the surveillance cameras during the attack.
The police said the four surviving suspects are currently assisting investigators as the authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery and identify every person who may have participated in the attack.
The latest arrests follow growing police attention to violent crimes involving gold buying businesses in the Western Region, where commercial activity connected to the gold trade has increasingly become a target for criminal groups.
The Western Regional Police Command has therefore intensified efforts to locate and apprehend additional suspects believed to have been involved in the robbery and murder. Authorities have also indicated that investigations remain active as officers continue examining the available evidence and tracing possible accomplices.
The death of the alleged gang leader following his arrest has added another dimension to the case, with the police yet to provide further details concerning the medical circumstances that preceded his death.
For now, the four surviving suspects remain under investigation, while the allegations against them have not been established in court. They are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
