It seems that a primary objective of the Bawumia Campaign has been to gather endorsement from chiefs, priests and
Imams.
In the past six months, he has been photographed virtually with every chiefs, priests and Imams that is identifiable.
This tactic adopted by the Bawumia/NPP Campaign is as against ensuring that there is house to house campaign by
the candidate and the parliamentary candidates as well as the party rank and file.
It seems that this tactic by the Bawumia/NPP campaign is based primarily on three assumptions, which are as
follows;
– That the chiefs, priests and Imams have following; and
– That these followers would accede to the opinions/endorsements of their leaders; and
– Vote according to how they are directed by these leaders.
These assumptions, and the calculations that are based on these assumptions, could fail to deliver the outcomes that
are expected, for a number of reasons.
First, a significant number of people in Ghana vote according to their tribe. But another significant number vote for
other reasons. This can be juxtaposed with the fact, from which one cannot run, that some of the chiefs who are
endorsing candidates, are themselves deeply unpopular in their own traditional areas, for a whole number f factors.
Number, with regard to priests and Imams, is that Ghana is a deeply religious nation. Virtually everybody has a
priest or swears by some Imam, but that allegiance, often, is for religious purpose, and not for political purposes.
Assuming that people will vote according to the dictates of their priests and Imams, work in certain instances, but
can be counter-productive in certain other instances as well.
On the whole, however, it seems that the entirety of the Bawumia Campaign is based on depending on these Chiefs,
priests and Imams for votes. It is a tactic that can fail, dramatically.
