Three people have died following an explosion and subsequent unrest at Hamile, a border town in the Upper West Region along the Ghana–Burkina Faso frontier. The victims are an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service and two suspected smugglers. The incident began on Tuesday when immigration officers spotted three suspected smugglers transporting contraband through an unapproved route towards Burkina Faso. The suspects, two teenagers on a sand-loaded tricycle and an elderly man on a motorcycle believed to be leading them, allegedly opened fire as officers pursued them. The gunfire reportedly struck suspected explosives on the tricycle, triggering a blast that killed the two teenagers and one officer instantly.

A second officer who suffered severe injuries was first taken to Nandom Hospital before being transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for advanced treatment, while the elderly man also sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical care. The deaths sparked further violence as some aggrieved youth in the community allegedly attacked immigration officers in retaliation, prompting the officers to fire back during the confrontation. About ten people were wounded in the clash and rushed to Nandom Hospital, heightening tension in the border town as groups of youth gathered in parts of Hamile to protest the deaths.

The military has since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence. Meanwhile, investigations have begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion, the nature of the suspected explosive materials, and the events that led to the deaths and the ensuing clashes. Community leaders and other stakeholders are also engaging residents to ease tensions and restore normalcy.
