Atlanta United have strengthened their goalkeeping options with the signing of Clement Diop via free agency.

The 29-year-old has signed a one-year deal through the 2023 MLS season, with Atlanta holding an option on 2024.

Diop joins the Five Stripes following a disrupted 2022 season in which he started at Inter Miami, making three appearances, before joining the New England Revolution as back-up to Djordje Petrovic, who replaced Matt Turner as No.1 following the USMNT goalkeeper’s move to Arsenal.

But Diop failed to make an appearance for the Revs, who declined his contract option, leaving him free to find a new club.

The one-time Senegal international now joins Brad Guzan and Quentin Westberg as another senior option for Atlanta United. It’s like Diop will compete with Westberg for starts early in the season as Guzan continues his recovery from an Achilles injury that left him sidelined for most of 2022.

“Clement brings more MLS experience to our roster and goalkeeping group,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club press release. “We feel confident in the group we have brought together with Brad, Quentin and now Clément added to the mix.”

Diop has previous MLS experience as a starter for both CF Montreal and the LA Galaxy having originally emerged at French Ligue 2 club Amiens.
