Ghana’s Black Maidens have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan in their quarterfinal encounter on Sunday afternoon.
The disappointing result brings an end to the campaign of Nana Joe Adarkwa’s team, who were unable to overcome their Japanese opponents in Rabat despite a determined effort to recover after falling behind.
Japan secured victory through Nanami Kurita, whose second half strike proved decisive in a closely contested encounter. The goal ended Ghana’s hopes of advancing to the semifinals, while the Asian side progressed to the next stage of the tournament.
Adarkwa made two adjustments to his starting formation for the crucial fixture, handing starting opportunities to Belinda Kpentey and Mavis Koah as Ghana sought to strengthen their chances of reaching the last four.
However, the Black Maidens endured a difficult opening period, struggling to establish their rhythm and create meaningful attacking opportunities. Their limited offensive threat was reflected in the statistics, as Ghana managed just one attempt on goal throughout the first half.
Japan, meanwhile, dictated proceedings during the opening 45 minutes, enjoying greater control of possession and applying pressure on the Ghanaian defence. Despite their dominance, the Japanese players were unable to convert their opportunities before the interval.
The contest eventually shifted after the restart when Kurita found the breakthrough, penetrating Ghana’s defensive structure to register the only goal of the afternoon and hand Japan a deserved advantage.
Although the Black Maidens attempted to mount a late comeback, their renewed attacking efforts failed to produce the equaliser they desperately needed. Japan maintained its defensive discipline and successfully protected the advantage until the final whistle.
The defeat means Ghana’s participation in the competition ends at the quarterfinal stage, marking another disappointing last eight exit for the West African nation. Japan, on the other hand, advances to the semifinals with its hopes of winning the tournament still alive.
