The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, continues to remain in detention in the Netherlands after his legal representatives failed in two separate attempts to obtain his release on bail amid ongoing extradition proceedings initiated at the request of the United States.

Mr Frimpong was apprehended at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, shortly after arriving from Ghana, following an extradition request submitted by American authorities over allegations involving romance fraud schemes and money laundering.

His detention subsequently attracted parliamentary and diplomatic attention, with Ghana’s Parliament confirming the development and engaging the country’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to facilitate the necessary consular interventions.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also acknowledged the government’s involvement, indicating that consular support was being extended to the detained legislator. The assistance included a diplomatic visit to Mr Frimpong while he remained in custody.

However, the MP’s legal representatives have challenged aspects of the extradition request, arguing that the warrant issued by a United States magistrate court was intended to facilitate questioning and did not contain formal criminal charges against their client.

Providing an update on the matter, Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, disclosed that efforts by the legal team to secure Mr Frimpong’s temporary freedom had been unsuccessful at both the initial bail application stage and during a subsequent appeal.

Mr Dafeamekpor explained that the two applications presented before the relevant court had failed, leaving the Asante Akyem North legislator in continued detention as the extradition process progressed.

He indicated that the legal proceedings were still active and that the substantive extradition hearing had been scheduled for November 18, 2026, subject to any unexpected developments that might affect the court’s timetable.

The Majority Chief Whip further dismissed reports suggesting that Mr Frimpong had already been transferred to the United States, stressing that the extradition process remained before the Dutch judicial authorities.

He maintained that the relevant legal procedures and documentation were still being examined and that no transfer to American jurisdiction had taken place.

The November 18 proceedings are expected to focus on the substantive extradition application and whether the legal conditions governing the proposed transfer of the Ghanaian legislator to the United States have been satisfied.

Until the Dutch court reaches a determination on the matter, Mr Frimpong will remain in custody as the proceedings continue.

The allegations forming the basis of the American extradition request remain unproven, and the Asante Akyem North MP has not been convicted of any of the offences cited against him.
