The Head of the IMANI Center for Policy and Education, Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, is pushing for a debate between the 2024 Presidential Elections.
He claims that he has sent letters to the leadership of the leading political parties in Ghana, requesting them to debate.
He has stated that such a debate would enhance democratic engagement and voter education, promote policy transparency and accountability, encourage peaceful and constructive political dialogue, and help address critical national issues.
He has therefore promised to share the responses of the political parties when IMANI receives them by July 10, 2024.
In a note on various social media platforms, Mr. Cudjoe explained his reasons for calling for the debate, saying that their participation will be beneficial to the political parties for the following reasons:
- Enhancing Democratic Engagement and Voter Education:
Public Understanding: The national election debate will allow voters to gain a clear understanding of their policy positions and plans, helping them make informed choices at the polls.
o Electoral Involvement: The debate will aim to further encourage broader civic engagement by stimulating interest in the electoral process in the lead up to Elections 2024 and motivate citizens to participate in the voting process.
- Promoting Policy Transparency and Accountability:
Policy Clarity: The debate will provide a platform for detailed discussions of policy proposals, ensuring that voters can critically evaluate each party’s approach to addressing current national challenges.
- Public Accountability: We believe their participation in the debate demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability, reinforcing the public’s trust in their parties brand and important positioning in Ghana’s political process.
- Encouraging Peaceful and Constructive Political Dialogue:
Civil Discourse: The debate will further foster a respectful exchange of ideas, setting a tone of civility and cooperation that is essential for a healthy democratic environment- entrenching Ghana’s democratic robustness in our fourth republican dispensation.
Conflict Reduction: We believe the event will help reduce political tensions as we approach Elections 2024, by providing a forum for addressing disagreements constructively and peacefully.
- Addressing Critical National Issues:
o Focus on Solutions: The debate will enable a focus on solutions to pressing national issues such as economic development, healthcare, education, and security, providing voters with a clear picture of each party’s priorities.
o Public Interest: The debate will also seek to align political discourse with the interests of the public, ensuring that issues debated on remain relevant and meaningful to the electorate.– Franklin Cudjoe, IMANI
