The government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), through its representatives in parliament, is attempting to grant tax waivers to some companies.

In all, the government intends to grant some $335, 000,000.00 (Three hundred and thirty-five million dollars) to these companies as waivers, that is, monies these companies would not be required to pay as taxes to government.

The Daily Searchlight is opposed to the idea of this waiver for a number of reasons.

First, the waiver means that monies that could have gone to constitute revenue and therefore development, would be shorted. Somewhere, it means that a road or a hospital would not be built.

Secondly, the waiver would grant undue advantage to a group of companies, advantages that others would not have.

Thirdly, there are indications that some of these companies are already engaged in activities that go to undermine the Ghanaian economy. This, in essence, means that the government is embarking on tax support to companies that are engaged in stealing and undermining the economy of Ghana.

The Daily Searchlight is of the firm believe that there is a need for further scrutiny before these waivers would be granted.

Clearly, it is an attempt by some people to reap where they have not sown, and should be resisted with all the force that can be gathered.
