A leading member of the Movement for Change, Mr. Hopeson Adorye, yesterday responded to an invitation by the Director-General of the Criminal Police Investigations Department (C.I.D) of the Ghana Police Service, but ended the evening in custody.
Plea for bail by his Counsel, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, was denied.
Mr. Adorye had accepted an invitation to visit the police headquarters with regard to certain statements he had made in the public domain.
Sources close to him reveal that he accepted the invitation and went in the company of his lawyer, Mr. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah. Later, they were directed to be taken to the Greater Accra Regional Police Office, where a statement was taken from him.
However, after the statement, he was denied bail and sent to the Ministries Police Station to spend the night in the cells.
Mr. Adorye’s arrest is believed to be politically motivated. He is part of a breakaway group from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) that has formed the rival Movement for Change to contest for political power.
Adorye has been a loud advocate of the new group, headed by Mr. Alan Kyeremateng.
Yesterday he was being held incommunicado at the Ministries Police Station with the excuse that inmates of the cell could not be disturbed because of the lateness of the hour.
He is expected to be processed to court today, Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024.
Yesterday, dozens of supporters of the detained man stormed the Ministries Police Station in solidarity. Among them was Mrs. Patricia Christabel Kyerematen, the wife of the Founder of the Movement for Change, Mr. Alan Kyeremateng.
