Tema, Jan. 27, GNA – Residents of Adjeikojo near Ashaiman and Klagon in the Greater Accra Region have appealed to the government to construct a footbridge across the Tema-Motorway to link the two towns and ensure pedestrian safety.
The people of Adjei-Kojo lamented that due to the busy nature of the Tema Motorway, pedestrians find it difficult in crossing from one end of the communities along the motorway to the other side especially during the rush hours.
Speaking with the Ghana News Agency in Tema Mr George Rockson a resident in Adjei-Kojo expressed his wariness on the lack of footbridge connecting the two towns and call on authorities to marshal plan to construct a one as the developments have made it a necessity.
“I will be very excited to see the footbridge constructed, for the safety of all citizens,” he added.
Ms Mary Asamoah a resident of Klagon called on the government to prioritize the construction of pedestrian overbridge for the safety of commuters whose daily business and domestic activities demands that they move from one end to the other.
She emphasised that “we are going through a big challenge, the government should come to our aid to construct the footbridge because we have no means to go to Adjei-Kojo other than crossing the motorway, and many people have died or become disabled trying to cross the motorway.
Mr Rashid Ibrahim, a pedestrian another resident stressed that “the aged, children, and women find it difficult to cross the road, the government should come to our rescue, after all, we pay tax as citizens”.
Mr Theophilus Yak a Driver noted motorists are not expected to stop on the motorway but due to development around the stretch and the peoples’ quest to move from one end to the other drivers are often forced to slow down for pedestrian to cross, which sometimes result in gridlock.
He further explained that because there is no option for commuters other than to cross, some drivers on a bad day knock down some pedestrians.
“We are calling on the government, Member of Parliament, the Municipal Chief Executive, and all stakeholders to make the necessary investments to increase connectivity, and improve safety to build a more connected Tema West,” he stated.
