Fijai (W/R), Jan. 27, GNA – The Western Regional Fire Command has intensified its fire safety education with a door-to-door campaign in a bid to reduce fire outbreaks in the Region.
DOIII Emmanuel Bonney, Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Service would visit lorry stations, shops, markets, mosques, and churches and engage the Association of Landlords as part of its fire safety education.
This, he said had become necessary due to the increasing cases of domestic fires which were mainly a result of misuse of electricity and gas cylinders.
He, therefore, underscored the need to create consciousness among the general public on the need to be responsible with fire use.
He said 95 of the 321 cases of fire outbreaks recorded in 2021 in the Region, representing 29.60 percent were domestic fires.
DOIII Bonney said fifty-two of the cases were bushfires, fifty involved commercial stores, forty-five were vehicular, and twelve were institutional.
He added that thirty-nine were electrical and meter burns with fourteen being sawdust and refuse dump fires.
He said the command recorded ten prank calls in 2021 as against fifteen last year.
DOIII cautioned Ghanaians against indiscriminate burning, especially around their houses.
He further advised farmers against burning to clear their lands and cooking on the farm saying, they were often unable to thoroughly extinguish the fires that they set in the farms.
He also admonished drivers to avoid over-speeding and be extra careful on the road as the harmattan had made the road very foggy.
According to him, there was the likelihood of a fire incident anytime there was an accident which could be serious especially because of the harmattan weather.
