The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has set the record straight to GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana that it has no hand in the said technical issues of the limited gas supply as contributing to the power challenge experienced in Ghana last night.
To be able to sell the natural gas to gas off-takers mainly power companies, WAPCo on its own accord transports gas on the contingent of gas shippers who purchase gas from gas suppliers and then transport the gas via WAPCo pipelines. When the agreed volume of gas is made available, WAPCo dutifully transports it to the shipper’s customers.
In view of this, the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo), the operator of the National Interconnected Transmission System assured its readiness to restore power to the affected customers as well as gas from Atuabo.
GRIDCo noted that there was a deficit in thermal power generation due to limited gas supply from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) and the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo)
WAPCo who has no technical issues in terms of its modern facilities to facilitate gas delivery was accused of being naive due to the creation of a supply gap of 650MW at peak time which affected consumers in some parts of the country.
WAPCo said the inability to transport gas was a result of the Ghana National Gas Company’s Plant which went down unexpectedly.
