There seems to be some simmering tension between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region over the jurisdiction in which the Kumasi International Airport is situated.

The simmering tension between the two Assemblies reached its crescendo when the newly endorsed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Kennedy Kamkam warned the leadership of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to desist from claiming ownership of the lands on which the airport is situated in the region.

According to him, the land on which the airport is situated is in the jurisdiction of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Kennedy Kankam, was confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti region.

He received an overwhelming affirmation of 100 percent of the votes cast.

The Daily Searchlight would like to call on the powers that be to, as a matter of urgency, call the two municipal assemblies together at a round table, to decide in which jurisdiction the airport lies, and the apportionment of revenue from the airport, which, in sum, is what the entire dispute is about.

We believe that Ghanaians ought to be spared the incredible specter of a public show of disagreement and possible judicial resolution between two municipal assemblies both working under the government of Ghana.

At the same time, we call on the appropriate officials to tone down on the rhetoric and engage in constructive engagement to resolve the impasse.
