The Human Rights Court 2 of the High Court in Accra has issued a temporary injunction restraining the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) from compelling 792 newly qualified medical doctors to take the Stage 1 Common Registration Examination (CRE) as a condition for obtaining provisional registration.
The order also applies to the Attorney General and the Ministry of Health, preventing them from enforcing the examination requirement until the court hears the substantive action and an application for an injunction on notice.
The legal proceedings were initiated by the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations (FGMSA) and the affected graduates, who are challenging the requirement imposed on them before they can proceed with their professional training.
In a statement released on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the federation disclosed that the court’s decision effectively suspends the examination, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 22.
The examination had been designated as a mandatory condition for the affected graduates to obtain provisional registration and commence their housemanship, a supervised clinical training period required of newly qualified doctors.
Following the court’s directive, FGMSA urged all parties involved in the dispute to respect the injunction and comply fully with the judicial order while the legal proceedings continue.
The federation emphasised that decisions affecting the professional advancement and future careers of graduating medical and dental students must be grounded in the law, fairness and the principles of due process.
It further expressed appreciation to its legal team, the affected graduating classes and medical and dental students for their support throughout the proceedings.
FGMSA added that additional information concerning the case would be communicated through its official channels as the matter progresses.
