Ghana entered the encounter without several established players, including captain Jordan Ayew, Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, while Carlos Queiroz’s side faced an Ivorian team beginning a new qualifying campaign under returning head coach Hervé Renard.

The Black Stars enjoyed spells of possession during the opening stages but struggled to translate those periods into sustained attacking pressure or clear opportunities. Côte d’Ivoire gradually assumed greater control and eventually found the breakthrough shortly before the interval.

Malick Yalcouyé opened the scoring in the 44th minute, receiving the ball outside the Ghana penalty area before producing a powerful effort that beat goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi and sent the Elephants into the break with a 1 0 advantage.

Ghana needed an immediate response after the restart, but the hosts extended their advantage when captain Franck Kessié converted from the penalty spot in the second half.

The second goal left the Black Stars facing a more difficult task as they attempted to find a route back into the contest. Ghana pushed forward but could not establish the sustained attacking momentum required to trouble the Ivorian defence.

Caleb Yirenkyi came closest to reducing the deficit when he found an opportunity inside the penalty area, but Côte d’Ivoire goalkeeper Yahia Fofana produced the required save to preserve the hosts’ two goal advantage.

The result gives Côte d’Ivoire three points from their opening Group C fixture, while Ghana begin their qualifying campaign without a point. Ghana are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, September 29, when they host The Gambia in Accra.

The defeat leaves the Black Stars with an early setback in their attempt to qualify for the 2027 continental championship after Ghana missed the previous Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The team will now turn its attention to the home fixture against The Gambia, with the technical staff expected to assess the performance in Bouaké and prepare for the next Group C assignment.

Ghana’s next match is scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29, with the Black Stars seeking their first points of the qualifying campaign.
