Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, PRESEC Legon, has once again cemented its dominance of Ghana’s National Science and Maths Quiz after overcoming a difficult start to capture the 2026 championship and extend its record to an unprecedented nine titles.

The Legon based school produced a determined fightback in a fiercely contested grand finale against St Augustine’s College and Accra Academy, eventually finishing with 40 points to secure the coveted trophy.

Accra Academy, appearing in the grand finale for the first time in the school’s history, finished strongly in second place with 33 points, while St Augustine’s College ended the contest in third position with 27 points.

The victory marked another remarkable chapter in PRESEC’s extraordinary history in the competition and further established the school as the most successful institution in the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

Yet, the triumph was far from assured when the competition began.

PRESEC endured a difficult opening round and accumulated just nine points, leaving the Ɔdadeɛ boys trailing both of their opponents.

St Augustine’s College and Accra Academy each registered 11 points, placing them jointly at the top of the early standings and leaving PRESEC with ground to recover.

The second round, however, signalled the beginning of the comeback.

PRESEC responded with eight additional points to raise its total to 17, drawing level with St Augustine’s College, while Accra Academy moved to 14 points.

The contest then entered a decisive phase in the third round, known as the Problem of the Day.

PRESEC maintained its momentum and added four more points to reach 21, while St Augustine’s remained on 17 points and Accra Academy stayed on 14.

For the first time in the final, PRESEC had moved into a clear advantage.

The lead, however, was far from secure as Accra Academy responded emphatically in the fourth round.

The Blɛoo boys surged to 30 points, while St Augustine’s College increased its tally to 27, placing renewed pressure on the defending record holders.

PRESEC, nevertheless, remained composed and extended its score to 34 points, ensuring that the championship would enter its closing stages with the Ɔdadeɛ boys still in control.

With the trophy now within reach, the final stage became a test of concentration, precision and composure.

PRESEC added another six points to finish on 40, while Accra Academy ended on 33 and St Augustine’s College remained on 27.

The seven point advantage over Accra Academy proved sufficient to deliver the championship to PRESEC and trigger celebrations among the school’s students, old boys and supporters.

The victory also produced a striking numerical coincidence.

PRESEC began the grand finale with nine points after the opening round and ended the night with nine National Science and Maths Quiz championship trophies.

That remarkable sequence transformed what initially appeared to be a difficult start into one of the most memorable championship campaigns in the school’s long history.

The triumph also restores PRESEC to the summit after the school last won the competition in 2023. The school had entered the 2026 final as an eight time champion, having previously lifted the trophy in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2020, 2022 and 2023.

This year’s success therefore adds another historic achievement to a record that already sets PRESEC apart from every other school that has competed in the prestigious academic contest.

For Accra Academy, the second place finish nevertheless represents a landmark achievement, coming in the school’s maiden appearance at the grand finale.

St Augustine’s College, meanwhile, delivered another strong campaign and reached the final for the third consecutive year, but could not add a third championship to its previous victories.

After five demanding rounds of competition, the trophy ultimately returned to the hands of the Ɔdadeɛ boys.

PRESEC Legon has made it nine, strengthening its grip on the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz and giving its supporters another championship moment to celebrate.

The 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz was produced by Primetime Limited with the Ghana Education Service as sponsor, alongside support from its various corporate partners.
