Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana this week following his reappointment as head coach of the Black Stars, as preparations intensify for the country’s campaign in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 73 year old tactician has been entrusted with another spell at the helm of the national team after previously guiding Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup during his short term tenure.
Queiroz’s previous assignment culminated in Ghana recording its strongest World Cup showing since 2010, with the Black Stars progressing beyond the group stage during the tournament staged across North America.
Following his return, the Portuguese coach is expected to be formally introduced to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, before subsequently engaging journalists and other stakeholders during a media interaction.
Although the Ghana Football Association has not yet publicly disclosed the terms of Queiroz’s new contract, sources indicate that the football governing body and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have reached an agreement in principle for the experienced coach to take charge under an initial one year arrangement.
The proposed agreement is expected to contain an extension provision, with Queiroz potentially retaining his position beyond the initial period should he successfully guide Ghana to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
His immediate responsibility will be to prepare the Black Stars for their opening qualifying assignments later this month, with Ghana facing two demanding fixtures within the space of three days.
The Black Stars are scheduled to travel to Bouaké on September 24, where they will confront Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix before returning home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.
The appointments come at a particularly important juncture for Ghanaian football, following the Black Stars’ failure to secure qualification for the previous Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
Consequently, Ghana will be seeking an immediate return to the continent’s foremost international football competition, with Queiroz expected to draw upon his experience to restore stability, competitiveness and confidence within the national team.
His return also places considerable attention on the coach’s ability to build upon the progress achieved during the 2026 World Cup while addressing the challenges that previously affected the Black Stars.
With the 2027 AFCON qualification campaign approaching rapidly, Queiroz will have limited time to assemble his squad, establish his tactical approach and ensure that Ghana begins the campaign strongly against two opponents capable of presenting significant challenges.
The Portuguese manager’s return therefore marks the beginning of another crucial chapter for the Black Stars, with qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations likely to serve as an immediate measure of the success of his renewed tenure.
