New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated GH¢50,000 to support the activities and continued development of St. Jude Catholic Church at Weija in the Greater Accra Region.
The contribution forms part of Dr Bawumia’s longstanding assistance to the church, having previously supported the construction of its main church building as well as an eight seater washroom facility fitted with features designed to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Dr Bawumia was honoured during a special Holy Mass organised to acknowledge his contributions to the church, after which he formally commissioned the newly completed washroom facility.
His visit also included a tour of the Weija Leprosarium, where he engaged with patients and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting their welfare and other initiatives aimed at improving their living conditions.
Following the ceremony, Dr Bawumia presented the GH¢50,000 donation to the church and pledged to maintain his support for its activities.
Explaining his motivation for assisting the project, Dr Bawumia praised Reverend Father Andrew Campbell for his commitment to serving vulnerable members of society, particularly people living with leprosy, the poor, children living on the streets and people suffering from various illnesses.
He said his decision to support the construction of the church was influenced by Father Campbell’s dedication to helping disadvantaged people and ensuring that they received care and dignity.
Dr Bawumia expressed satisfaction with the completion of the church, noting that he was pleased to see the project reach its present stage after providing resources to help facilitate its construction.
Father Andrew Campbell, in response to the donation, described Dr Bawumia’s contribution as evidence of his compassion and willingness to support people facing difficult circumstances.
According to Father Campbell, Dr Bawumia has consistently demonstrated empathy towards vulnerable and sick individuals, particularly through his interactions with patients at the Weija Leprosarium.
He noted that during the visit, Dr Bawumia personally interacted with the patients, shook hands with them and embraced several of them, actions he said demonstrated genuine concern for their welfare.
Father Campbell further commended the NPP flagbearer for supporting numerous individuals and initiatives, attributing his continued involvement in humanitarian activities to what he described as a strong concern for the well being of others.
The donation and commissioning ceremony therefore highlighted Dr Bawumia’s continued involvement in supporting the Catholic Church at Weija, while his engagement with residents of the leprosarium also underscored his stated commitment to assisting vulnerable communities.
