A newborn baby has been rescued after being discovered abandoned inside a dustbin at the Kasoa Main Lorry Station, with the timely intervention of a passerby preventing what could have become a fatal incident.
The infant was reportedly found near a public toilet at the busy transport terminal after a Good Samaritan who had gone to use the facility noticed the baby inside a nearby dustbin.
According to the rescuer, she was approaching the washroom when she observed what appeared to be a wrapped item inside the refuse container. Upon closer inspection, she discovered that the item was a newborn baby wrapped in tissue.
She said she immediately realised that the child was still alive because the baby was breathing, prompting her to act quickly and seek medical assistance.
“I visited the washroom and realised that the baby had been wrapped in tissue and placed inside the dustbin. I noticed that the baby was breathing, so I immediately took the baby to the hospital, where the baby is receiving treatment,” she said.
The rescuer subsequently conveyed the newborn to the Kasoa Polyclinic, where medical personnel admitted the child for assessment and treatment.
The discovery has prompted concern among residents and commuters at the lorry station, particularly because the circumstances surrounding the abandonment remain unclear.
The matter has since been reported to the police, who have commenced investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the baby being abandoned and identify the person responsible.
Police investigators are expected to examine information surrounding the discovery and speak with potential witnesses as they work to determine how the newborn came to be inside the dustbin.
The immediate priority, however, remains the wellbeing of the child, who is currently receiving medical attention at the Kasoa Polyclinic.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the vulnerability of newborns and the need for appropriate support systems for individuals facing difficult circumstances during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations progress and efforts continue to establish the identity of the person who abandoned the baby.
