The Ministry of Education has instructed the Ghana Education Service to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the violent disturbance at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, which resulted in injuries to the school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria.

The Ministry described the incident as a serious act of violence and criminal conduct, stressing that such behaviour has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be accepted under any circumstances.

In a statement signed by Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apak, the Ministry directed the GES to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the unrest and ensure that individuals found responsible are subjected to appropriate disciplinary and legal measures.

“The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement said.

Headmaster Abdulai Zakaria was reportedly attacked during unrest that erupted on the school campus on Tuesday night, resulting in injuries that required urgent medical attention.

Following the incident, he was initially taken to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.

Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive Faustilove Appiah Kannin confirmed that the headmaster was moved to KATH because of the seriousness of his condition.

“He has a fracture in the head, and that is why he has been rushed to Komfo Anokye,” she stated during an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

The Ghana Police Service intervened to restore calm after the disturbance and has maintained a security presence on the school campus to prevent further escalation.

Some students have also been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue into the events that triggered the unrest.

The Education Ministry revealed that the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service to immediately begin a full inquiry into the matter.

The Ministry further stated that it will collaborate with the GES and other relevant state agencies to strengthen discipline within schools, safeguard the welfare of school administrators and students, and ensure that educational institutions remain secure environments for teaching and learning.

Meanwhile, authorities in Obuasi are currently evaluating the security situation at the school as discussions continue over whether students should be temporarily withdrawn from campus.

The Municipal Chief Executive indicated that a possible closure of the school is being considered as part of measures to maintain safety, although no final decision has been reached.

The specific cause of the disturbance remains unclear, while police investigations are ongoing to establish the events that led to the violent confrontation.
