Authorities in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region have imposed a night time curfew on Damankungyili, Nyeshie and neighbouring communities following violent clashes that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to six others.
The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council has announced that the restriction will take effect from Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in force from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every day until further notice.
The Council explained that the decision was an immediate security intervention aimed at restoring calm, safeguarding residents and preventing further violence in the affected communities.
The directive was issued after an emergency meeting of the Northern Regional Security Council, which reviewed the security situation and considered measures necessary to contain tensions following the disturbances.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council and Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Imoro Gong, announced that authorities had also introduced an immediate prohibition on the possession and movement of firearms, ammunition and other weapons within the affected areas.
Mr Imoro Gong further disclosed that joint security operations had been strengthened, with intensified patrols being conducted to enforce the curfew, protect residents and maintain peace and stability across the communities.
He stated that the Municipal Security Council would continue monitoring developments closely and would provide further updates as the security situation evolves.
The Municipal Chief Executive condemned the violence that led to the loss of life and injuries, expressing sympathy to the family of the deceased while wishing those receiving medical attention a swift recovery.
He appealed to residents to remain composed and cooperate fully with security agencies as efforts continue to restore normalcy. He also encouraged individuals with relevant information regarding the disturbances to assist the Police with ongoing investigations.
Mr Imoro Gong further called on traditional authorities, youth leaders and media organisations to support peace building efforts by helping to reduce tensions and encourage dialogue among affected communities.
The clashes are reportedly linked to a prolonged land ownership dispute between Damankungyili and Nyeshie communities, with both sides claiming rights over the same piece of land. Authorities have therefore moved to strengthen security measures while investigations and efforts toward restoring lasting peace continue.
