Youth development has emerged as one of the defining pillars of the annual Edina Bakatue Festival as Ahomka FM and Ocean 1 TV continue to reshape the traditional celebration into a powerful platform for leadership, innovation, social responsibility and talent discovery. What began as a vision to give young people greater opportunities has evolved into one of Ghana’s most impactful community based empowerment initiatives, producing confident leaders, nurturing sporting excellence and equipping young women with the skills and platforms needed to drive meaningful social transformation.
The initiative traces its origins to the vision of distinguished Ghanaian entrepreneur and business leader Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, who challenged the media to redefine its public service mandate. Rather than limiting their role to broadcasting news and entertainment, he encouraged media organizations to become catalysts for national development by identifying gifted young people, nurturing their abilities and providing them with opportunities to transform their talents into instruments of community progress.
Inspired by that challenge, Ahomka FM and Ocean 1 TV established two flagship programmes that have since become integral components of the internationally celebrated Edina Bakatue Festival. The Miss Edina Bakatue Beauty Pageant was introduced to empower young women through leadership, advocacy and personal development, while the Edina Community Gala Football Competition was created to provide young men with opportunities to showcase their sporting abilities while promoting unity, discipline and healthy competition among the various communities within the Edina Traditional Area.
Over the years, both initiatives have expanded far beyond their original entertainment objectives. They have matured into comprehensive youth development programmes that cultivate confidence, encourage civic responsibility and expose participants to life changing opportunities capable of influencing their educational, professional and personal futures.
Every community within the Edina Traditional Council nominates a representative to compete for the Miss Edina Bakatue crown, while community football teams compete for supremacy in the prestigious gala tournament. The competitions have become symbols of communal pride and youth participation, strengthening social cohesion while providing emerging talents with a stage to demonstrate their abilities before thousands of spectators.
Participants who distinguish themselves receive an impressive range of developmental opportunities that extend well beyond trophies and public recognition. Winners benefit from sponsored international travel, fully financed driving lessons together with official driver’s licences, luxury holiday experiences at Coconut Grove Beach Resort and several other valuable educational and personal development packages. Talented footballers identified during the Community Gala are further supported to pursue professional careers through connections with football clubs in Ghana and abroad, opening pathways that have the potential to transform their lives and those of their families.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Miss Edina Bakatue Beauty Pageant is its deliberate departure from conventional beauty contests that traditionally place greater emphasis upon physical appearance. Instead, contestants are evaluated on their leadership qualities, intellectual capacity, communication skills, community engagement and commitment to solving pressing social challenges affecting their communities.
Every contestant is required to identify a significant social issue within the Edina Traditional Area and develop a practical advocacy project designed to create measurable and sustainable change. Winners are subsequently connected with non governmental organizations, development agencies, corporate institutions and community stakeholders who provide technical guidance and logistical support to ensure that these initiatives move beyond concepts and become tangible interventions capable of improving lives.
The 2026 edition has once again demonstrated how youth centred leadership can become a powerful force for social progress.
Crowned as Miss Edina Bakatue 2026, Anthoinette Tracy Dadzie has committed her reign to combating child abuse across the Central Region. Her campaign seeks to strengthen public awareness on child protection, encourage communities to safeguard children’s rights and promote collective action against all forms of abuse, neglect and exploitation. At a time when child protection remains an important national concern, her advocacy has the potential to contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts aimed at creating safer environments for vulnerable children.
First Runner Up Priscilla Cecilia Ussher has chosen to confront one of Ghana’s most pressing socioeconomic challenges by advocating practical solutions to youth unemployment. Her campaign focuses upon expanding skills development, encouraging entrepreneurship, promoting vocational training and increasing access to employment opportunities capable of equipping young people with sustainable livelihoods. Her initiative aligns closely with Ghana’s broader national agenda of reducing graduate unemployment while strengthening the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Second Runner Up Abigail Jobina Tandon will champion the “Mind Matters: Breaking the Silence on Mental Health Among Teenage Girls” campaign. Her advocacy seeks to encourage open discussions surrounding adolescent mental health, eliminate social stigma associated with psychological conditions and promote greater access to counselling together with emotional support services for teenage girls. As awareness grows regarding the importance of mental wellbeing, her campaign addresses an increasingly urgent public health challenge affecting thousands of young people across Ghana.
Collectively, the advocacy projects selected by the winners illustrate how beauty pageants can evolve into powerful platforms for civic leadership and sustainable social development. Rather than merely celebrating personal achievement, the programme empowers young women to become ambassadors for meaningful causes capable of generating lasting change within their communities.
The historical significance of the initiative extends beyond the annual festival itself. At a time when many African societies are searching for innovative approaches to youth empowerment, the Miss Edina Bakatue Beauty Pageant and Edina Community Gala provide a practical model demonstrating how culture, tradition, media and community leadership can be integrated to produce measurable social outcomes. By combining cultural heritage with education, advocacy, sports development and leadership training, the programme is nurturing a generation of socially conscious young leaders prepared to contribute to Ghana’s democratic, economic and community development.
As preparations commence for implementing the winning advocacy projects, organizers have appealed to government agencies, corporate institutions, development organizations, civil society groups and philanthropic partners to provide financial, technical and institutional support to ensure that these youth led interventions achieve their intended impact.
Through the enduring collaboration between Ahomka FM, Ocean 1 TV, the Edina Traditional Council, community leaders and development partners, the annual Miss Edina Bakatue Beauty Pageant together with the Edina Community Gala continue to demonstrate that investing in the aspirations, talents and leadership potential of young people remains one of the most effective strategies for building resilient communities, advancing sustainable national development and securing a more prosperous future for Ghana.
