High Court Fast Tracks Emergency Bid to Halt Extradition of Socialite Abu Trica as Legal Battle Intensifies The Accra High Court has moved to fast track proceedings in a high stakes legal contest involving socialite Abu Trica, granting his legal team an abridgement of time to argue an urgent application seeking to temporarily stop his extradition to the United States.
The court has scheduled Thursday, July 9, as the decisive day for the hearing, where lawyers representing Abu Trica and officials from the Attorney General’s Department are expected to present arguments on whether the extradition process should be paused pending further legal review.
At the centre of the application is a request for an emergency injunction aimed at halting the enforcement of an earlier order that authorised his extradition. His legal team is also asking the court to maintain the status quo until an appeal already filed is fully heard and determined.
Lead counsel, Barker Vormawor, argued that the request is grounded in constitutional protections that guarantee the right of appeal. He maintained that such rights must be fully exhausted before any transfer of custody to foreign authorities is executed, stressing that to proceed otherwise would undermine due process.
The court’s decision to grant the abridgement of time effectively compresses the usual procedural timelines, ensuring that all parties will be heard on an expedited basis before any final action is taken in the extradition process. The move signals the judiciary’s recognition of the urgency and legal sensitivity surrounding the matter.
This latest development follows earlier proceedings in which the High Court dismissed an application seeking certiorari to overturn a ruling from the Gbese District Court, which had earlier approved the extradition request linked to criminal allegations originating from the United States justice system.
According to court records and proceedings, Abu Trica was reportedly rearrested within the premises of the Accra High Court shortly after attending hearings connected to the extradition case, underscoring the intensity and procedural complexity surrounding the matter.
The case is rooted in extradition requests initiated by United States authorities, who are pursuing Abu Trica in connection with allegations of approximately eight million dollars in romance related fraud tied to ongoing international investigations.
The unfolding legal contest has drawn widespread public attention in Ghana due to its cross border implications, the scale of the alleged financial crime, and the visible cooperation between Ghanaian judicial institutions and foreign prosecuting authorities.
Should the emergency application fail, legal representatives have indicated readiness to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court, setting the stage for what could become a final constitutional test on whether the extradition will proceed or be permanently halted within Ghana’s judicial framework.
