The Ministry for the Interior has immediately suspended the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited following a shooting incident in Accra that left former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo hospitalised.

The decision, which takes effect with immediate enforcement, comes amid preliminary investigations into events that occurred at Kwabenya on June 21, 2026, where personnel of the private security firm were reportedly involved in circumstances that resulted in gunfire.

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry on June 22, the suspension is based on initial findings suggesting possible breaches of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), which governs the operations, conduct and standards of private security companies operating within Ghana.

The Ministry indicated that early investigations point to concerns including the use of unapproved uniforms, as well as the alleged unauthorized possession and deployment of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company while carrying out private security duties.

Authorities stressed that such conduct, if confirmed, represents a serious violation of regulatory standards and raises significant concerns regarding public safety, accountability and the lawful use of force by non state security actors.

The statement emphasized that the alleged infractions go to the core of Ghana’s regulatory framework for private security operations, which is designed to ensure that only properly authorized equipment, uniforms and weapons are used under strict oversight conditions.

As a result of the developments, the Ministry directed Kantanka Security Services Limited to cease all operations immediately pending the completion of ongoing investigations by the Ghana Police Service and other relevant security agencies.

The directive effectively halts all activities of the company nationwide until further notice, as authorities seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Ministry further instructed all institutions, organizations and individuals to suspend any dealings with the company until investigations are concluded and official clearance is granted.

In addition, the company has been ordered to fully cooperate with the Ghana Police Service by providing all relevant information, documentation and assistance required to facilitate a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.

Officials clarified that the suspension is an administrative precautionary measure intended to protect public safety and preserve order while investigations proceed, rather than a final determination of guilt or liability.

However, the Ministry also underscored that any proven breaches of the law will attract appropriate sanctions in accordance with Ghana’s regulatory framework governing private security organisations.

The incident that triggered the suspension has also drawn wider public attention due to its connection with the hospitalization of Sarah Adwoa Safo, who reportedly sustained injuries during the shooting episode at Kwabenya.

Authorities have not yet released full details on the circumstances that led to the discharge of firearms, but police investigators are expected to reconstruct the sequence of events as part of their ongoing probe.

The case has intensified scrutiny of private security operations in Ghana, particularly with regard to firearms control, training standards and compliance with national security regulations.

Security analysts note that private security firms play an increasingly important role in Ghana’s safety architecture, but incidents involving alleged misuse of firearms highlight the need for stricter enforcement of existing laws and closer regulatory supervision.

As investigations continue, the Interior Ministry has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all private security operators comply fully with national laws and operate within clearly defined professional and legal boundaries.

The final outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether further sanctions, prosecutions or regulatory reforms will follow in what is shaping up to be one of the most significant private security oversight cases in recent years.
