Two persons have lost their lives following a devastating fuel tanker explosion at Adubinsu in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, after a tanker reportedly lost control and burst into flames in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the tanker was en route from Edwenase towards Adubinsu when it is believed to have suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The tanker is said to have somersaulted before erupting into a massive fire that rapidly spread to nearby structures.
The resulting blaze destroyed six container shops and partially consumed a residential building close to the scene, leaving traders and residents in shock as the fire engulfed property within minutes.
One eyewitness, Daniel Owusu, recounted that the impact of the crash and subsequent explosion created panic in the community as residents scrambled for safety while attempting to salvage belongings from the burning structures.
He further confirmed that the mate of the tanker was initially rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead, increasing the death toll to two.
Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service and officers from the Ghana Police Service were quickly deployed to the area to contain the inferno and secure the accident scene. Firefighters worked to prevent further spread of the flames to nearby buildings while police assisted in crowd control and preliminary investigations.
The identities of the deceased driver and his assistant have not yet been officially released by authorities.
Law enforcement officials have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash and the circumstances that led to the explosion, including mechanical failure and possible safety lapses.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the transportation of highly flammable materials through populated communities, as residents call for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance and transport regulations in the region.
