The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress has issued a firm caution to members of the party, urging them to desist from any form of premature presidential campaign activity and instead maintain unity, discipline, and a strong focus on governance responsibilities.

The advisory follows a high level engagement between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026, where discussions centred on strengthening internal cohesion within the party, reinforcing organisational discipline, and consolidating support for the government’s “Resetting Agenda” aimed at national development and institutional renewal.

In a formal statement released after the meeting, the Council expressed concern over increasing indications of early campaign mobilisation by certain individuals and factions within the party structure. It warned that such conduct risks weakening internal unity and diverting attention from the central task of governance.

The Council emphasised that the party is currently entrusted with the responsibility of governing Ghana and therefore expects all members to prioritise national development efforts over internal competition. It stressed that resources, energy, and political activity should be directed toward supporting the administration’s policy agenda rather than fuelling internal rivalry.

The statement further underscored that at this stage of national rebuilding and institutional reform, party members are expected to fully commit themselves to advancing government programmes designed to improve living conditions and strengthen public confidence in governance.

Referencing Article 42 of the party’s constitution, the Council noted that procedures for selecting a presidential candidate are clearly defined and must be initiated only by the National Executive Committee. It reiterated that no individual, group, or affiliated structure has the authority to commence campaign activities outside officially approved timelines.

The Council therefore made it clear that until the National Executive Committee formally announces the timetable and guidelines for presidential primaries, all forms of campaigning, mobilisation, endorsement drives, and related political activities remain strictly unauthorized.

It consequently directed all individuals engaged in such activities to halt them immediately, stressing that adherence to internal rules is essential for preserving order, unity, and institutional credibility within the party.

The Council concluded by reminding members that internal political competition is inevitable but must occur at the appropriate time and through the established constitutional framework. It urged members to remain focused on the broader national mandate, noting that the current priority is to serve the country and ensure effective implementation of government commitments.
