The Ghana National Fire Service has raised serious concern over the level of fire safety compliance within the Kpone industrial enclave, cautioning that any large scale fire incident in the area could trigger far reaching consequences for Ghana’s energy stability and overall economic resilience.
Divisional Officer Two Ebenezer Yenzu, who serves as the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Service, explained that the enclave accommodates vital national infrastructure operated by both state owned and private entities, particularly in the power generation, oil, and gas sectors, making it one of the most strategically sensitive industrial locations in the country.
Addressing stakeholders at an intersectoral review meeting convened by the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, he highlighted key installations within the enclave, including the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, Quantum LPG, and Quantum Oil, describing the area as a densely industrialised zone with elevated fire exposure risks.
He stressed that any failure by operators to comply strictly with established safety protocols could escalate into a major industrial catastrophe with nationwide implications, especially for energy supply and distribution networks.
According to him, a significant fire outbreak within the enclave could lead to severe shortages in petroleum and gas products while also disrupting electricity generation across the country, a situation that would directly affect households, businesses, and critical national services.
He further indicated that the Ghana National Fire Service has intensified its inspection and enforcement operations within the enclave as part of efforts to ensure full adherence to fire safety regulations and to strengthen emergency preparedness across all facilities.
He added that the Service continues to collaborate closely with operators in identifying potential hazards, improving preventive safety systems, and reducing the likelihood of industrial fire outbreaks.
Providing data on recent incidents, he disclosed that the Tema Region recorded 318 fire outbreaks between January and April 2026, a figure that underscores the persistent risk of fire related emergencies in the area.
He noted that approximately one quarter of these incidents occurred within the Kpone Katamanso Municipality, which is supported by fire stations located in Katamanso, Akuse, the Industrial Area, and Community 25.
He therefore urged all industrial operators and business entities within the enclave to prioritise strict safety compliance, regular staff training, and consistent maintenance of fire prevention systems in order to protect lives, safeguard property, and preserve essential national infrastructure.
