The announcement was made during the official launch of Ghana’s new e visa service portal on Monday, May 25, in Accra, where the President outlined several reforms intended to modernise the country’s aviation and border management systems.

According to him, the new scanning technology will eliminate the current requirement for passengers to remove laptops and liquid items from their hand luggage during security screening, thereby reducing delays and easing congestion at security checkpoints.

He explained that the installation of the 3D scanners forms part of a broader strategy to modernise airport operations and enhance efficiency in passenger processing at Ghana’s main international gateway.

The President further disclosed that additional security equipment expected to arrive in August will introduce further improvements, including the removal of the requirement for travellers to take off their shoes and belts during screening procedures.

He noted that the current practice of removing personal items such as shoes and belts has long been a source of inconvenience for passengers and the upcoming upgrades are intended to address these challenges directly.

The initiative is part of government’s wider digital transformation agenda, which seeks to integrate modern technology into public service delivery and position Ghana as a more accessible and competitive destination for tourism, investment, and international business travel.

President Mahama also reaffirmed Ghana’s open travel posture toward African nationals, noting that effective immediately, citizens of African countries will no longer be required to pay visa fees when entering Ghana under the new policy framework.
