The World Bank has reiterated its continued commitment to supporting the Government of Ghana in ensuring the full and prompt operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital, a major health infrastructure project expected to strengthen paediatric healthcare delivery in the country.

The 120 bed facility was constructed and fully equipped under the World Bank’s COVID 19 Emergency Preparedness and Response Project, identified as P173788, at an estimated cost of US$10.15 million, as part of efforts to enhance Ghana’s resilience and response capacity within the health sector.

The project officially reached closure on December 16, 2025, following a six month extension granted to accommodate delays linked to challenges in securing government counterpart funding, which affected the timely completion of certain critical components.

According to the World Bank, several elements of the project remained incomplete at the time of closure. These outstanding works included final installations at the Weija facility as well as the implementation of specific safety measures required under the institution’s Environmental and Social Framework governing health infrastructure development.

In a statement issued on May 25, the World Bank noted that following project closure, the Government of Ghana may utilise undisbursed International Development Association funds to settle eligible outstanding obligations tied to approved project activities up to June 16, 2025.

The institution further clarified that the Government retains full responsibility for mobilising domestic resources to complete remaining environmental and social safeguard requirements, in addition to financing any expenditures that fall outside the scope of IDA eligible funding.

It added that the ultimate activation and public use of the hospital will depend on the successful completion of all pending works, alongside the deployment of the necessary medical and administrative personnel to fully staff the facility.

The World Bank stressed that it continues to engage actively with Ghanaian authorities to ensure that the Weija Paediatric Hospital is completed, properly equipped, staffed, and opened to the public at the earliest possible time, underscoring its broader commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the country.
