The Bureau of National Investigations has released the Agona West organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party, David Essendoh, following his arrest in connection with allegations of false publication linked to a social media post concerning electricity supply interruptions.
Essendoh was reportedly apprehended after publishing content online suggesting that “dumsor,” the widely recognised Ghanaian expression used to describe recurring power outages, had resurfaced under the current administration.
The social media publication was accompanied by an image of a billboard displaying the photograph of President John Dramani Mahama together with an inscription referencing the alleged return of the power crisis.
Earlier on the same day, leadership figures within the New Patriotic Party publicly criticised the circumstances surrounding the arrest, describing the operation as unlawful and raising concerns regarding the treatment of the party official.
Senior party members further expressed anxiety over Essendoh’s whereabouts after unsuccessful attempts to trace him through visits to both the Police Criminal Investigations Department headquarters and National Security offices.
However, a subsequent visit to the BNI facility located at Kawkudi later confirmed that the opposition organiser had indeed been held in custody there following his arrest.
Following engagements with officials, efforts were initiated to secure his release after the necessary bail conditions were satisfied pending the continuation of investigations into the matter.
The incident has since generated renewed political debate surrounding issues of freedom of expression, online publications, and the handling of politically sensitive cases involving opposition figures in Ghana.
