The governing National Democratic Congress has strongly dismissed allegations that the government is diverting funds intended for cocoa farmers to acquire four aircraft for President John Dramani Mahama, describing the claims as entirely false, reckless, and politically motivated.
The controversy emerged after the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, reportedly made the allegations while touring cocoa growing communities. According to the NDC, the opposition lawmaker claimed the government was depriving cocoa farmers of financial resources in order to finance the procurement of presidential jets.
Addressing journalists during the relaunch of the party’s “Setting the Records Straight” platform in Accra, the Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, Ako Gunn, firmly rejected the accusations and insisted they were devoid of factual basis.
According to Mr Gunn, assertions that public funds had been used to purchase four aircraft for the President were not only demonstrably inaccurate but also highly irresponsible within the context of national political discourse.
He argued that the opposition New Patriotic Party has increasingly resorted to what he described as a coordinated misinformation strategy after struggling to regain public confidence on governance and policy matters.
Mr Gunn further contended that the narrative being circulated within cocoa producing communities was deliberately crafted to generate dissatisfaction among farmers by linking legitimate government initiatives to unverified and politically charged allegations.
He maintained that the communication approach adopted by the opposition reflects a broader pattern of selective narratives, distorted claims, and calculated propaganda intended to influence public perception regarding state policies and national administration.
According to him, the reintroduction of the “Setting the Records Straight” platform forms part of the NDC’s renewed effort to respond rapidly to controversial public claims while ensuring what he described as factual accuracy and clarity within national discussions.
The latest political exchange adds to the intensifying war of words between the governing party and the opposition as both sides continue to compete aggressively for influence over public opinion, particularly within economically significant sectors such as Ghana’s cocoa industry.
