Allied health professionals at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have expressed firm opposition to the reversal of the appointment of the Head of Laboratory Services, cautioning that the decision could disrupt institutional operations and weaken previously established agreements between health sector stakeholders and government authorities.

In a formal communication dated May 5, 2026, and addressed to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Yakubu Seidu Adam, the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professionals Korle Bu Chapter described the development as inconsistent with the consensus reached during a high level engagement convened by the Ministry of Health Ghana earlier in the year.

The group indicated that discussions held on February 3, 2026, had culminated in an agreement endorsing the appointment of a Medical Laboratory Scientist as Head of Laboratory Services under the Sub BMC framework, a structure intended to strengthen accountability, safeguard professional standards, and improve governance within laboratory operations.

However, the federation noted that hospital management has since rescinded the appointment and reassigned supervisory responsibility over the Central Laboratory to the Director of Medical Affairs, a move it contends is at variance with the understanding previously reached.

According to the statement issued by the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professionals, the decision undermines agreed institutional outcomes, established professional arrangements, and the operational autonomy of allied health practice within the hospital setting.

The group further cautioned that the development has generated significant concern among allied health personnel at the facility and risks weakening trust in ongoing dialogue between stakeholders in the health sector.

It therefore called for the immediate reversal of the decision and urged hospital management to realign its actions with the resolutions agreed under the facilitation of the Ministry of Health Ghana.

Reaffirming its stance, the federation stated that while it remains committed to professionalism and the preservation of industrial harmony within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, it will continue to rely on lawful collective processes should the matter remain unresolved, signalling the possibility of further organised action if necessary.
