The Ministry of Transport Ghana has confirmed the arrival of a newly acquired Boeing 737 400 freighter belonging to Air Ghana, which landed in the country on Tuesday, May 5, marking a notable expansion in Ghana’s air cargo and logistics capacity.

The aircraft acquisition is part of a broader strategic effort by Air Ghana to strengthen its freight operations, improve regional connectivity, and enhance the movement of goods within Ghana and across the West African sub region.

Chief Executive Officer of the company, Karim Traboulsi, previously indicated that the addition of the freighter is expected to improve delivery efficiency, reduce supply chain delays, and reinforce Ghana’s emerging position as a regional aviation and logistics hub.

The development coincides with renewed government efforts to re establish a national carrier, following the collapse of previous state airlines. The Ministry of Transport Ghana has recently initiated a market sounding process aimed at identifying experienced aviation investors and operators to partner in the formation of a new commercially driven airline.

Under the proposed structure, the selected strategic investor is expected to hold a majority equity stake and lead the management of a joint venture, reflecting a shift toward private sector led airline operations. Authorities have indicated that the envisioned carrier will operate as a full service airline, with long haul passenger routes to destinations in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, alongside regional services and an integrated cargo division.

Prospective partners are required to demonstrate strong operational experience in airline management, regulatory compliance capability, and sufficient financial strength to support fleet expansion and network development.

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, earlier stated in January 2026 that the government aims to conclude key regulatory and documentation processes within a twelve month period as part of the airline revival roadmap.

A ten member national airline task force, constituted in May 2025, is currently overseeing the project, with responsibility for fleet planning, staffing frameworks, and route development strategies.

Ghana has been without a fully operational national carrier since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004, following prolonged financial difficulties and unsuccessful restructuring attempts, while a subsequent successor, Ghana International Airlines, ceased operations in 2010.

The arrival of the new freighter is therefore expected to provide immediate support to Ghana’s expanding aviation logistics sector while aligning with broader national ambitions to establish the country as a competitive air transport and trade hub within the West African sub region.
