He made the remarks on Monday, May 4, during the official unveiling of the Regional Health, Nutrition and Population Strategy for West and Central Africa held in Accra. The initiative has been developed by the World Bank in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Health.

The strategy is designed to mobilize substantial financial resources across more than twenty countries within the sub region, with the aim of strengthening healthcare systems, improving nutritional outcomes, and enhancing preparedness for future public health emergencies.

Mr Debrah stated that investment in healthcare should be viewed not only as a social responsibility but also as a critical economic strategy for nations seeking sustainable development and long term resilience. He indicated that Ghana’s approach aligns with a broader national ambition of achieving universal health coverage and ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services for all citizens regardless of income level or geographic location.

Also addressing the event, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that Ghana’s role as host of the launch reflects significant progress in the country’s health sector reforms and institutional strengthening.

He stressed that the global objective of universal health coverage remains time sensitive, pointing out that the 2030 target is fast approaching. He therefore called for accelerated investment in healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment, and human resources to meet the growing demands of populations across the region.

The new strategy is expected to serve as a coordinated framework for reforms and investments aimed at improving health system resilience and overall health outcomes across West and Central Africa.
