The Ministry of Education has reassured members of the Ga and Adangbe communities that their languages will not be excluded from an upcoming Artificial Intelligence–powered education tool being developed in collaboration with Google.

In a statement issued by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Education Minister, the Ministry explained that the selection of only four local languages for the initial rollout is strictly part of a pilot phase and does not determine the final scope of the programme. The clarification comes after criticism from Ga and Adangbe groups, who expressed concern that their languages had been sidelined when the pilot was first announced by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu.

According to the Ministry, the pilot stage is intended to evaluate the effectiveness, adaptability, and educational impact of the AI learning tool before it is gradually expanded across the country. The programme, the statement emphasised, is designed to be fully inclusive and to ensure that no linguistic or cultural group is permanently left out.

“At no point is the pilot intended to marginalise or permanently exclude any linguistic or cultural group within the country,” the Ministry said, reiterating its commitment to Ghana’s linguistic diversity and equitable access to quality education.

Upon successful completion of the pilot, the Ministry confirmed that the AI initiative will be scaled up to cover all 12 approved Ghanaian languages, explicitly including Ga and Adangbe, thereby guaranteeing broader participation and representation.

The announcement underlines the Ministry’s goal of harnessing emerging technologies to improve learning outcomes across Ghana while preserving and promoting the country’s rich linguistic heritage.
