In a post on X on Saturday, January 24, the MP described the incident as deeply unfortunate and emphasised that the welfare and safety of students and residents are non-negotiable priorities. He highlighted the urgent need for practical interventions to prevent further accidents along the heavily trafficked N1 highway.

“The safety of each student in Ayawaso West is my utmost concern. The passing of Nelson, the student journalist who was trying to cross the N1, is very unfortunate,” Dumelo said. He added that the tragedy illustrates the critical responsibility of local authorities to ensure safety measures are implemented without delay.

Nelson Blay Nokotey lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the N1 near the Dzorwulu traffic light intersection, close to the Lapaz footbridge. He had just left campus and was on his way home when the accident occurred. The incident has reignited public concern and intensified calls for improved pedestrian safety infrastructure, particularly for students who must navigate the busy highway daily.

In response, Dumelo extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the UniMAC IJ community, assuring them of his support during this difficult period. “My sincere condolences to the family and to the entire GIJ community. I stand with you,” he stated.

The tragedy also moved students to hold a candlelight vigil on Friday, January 23, to honour Nelson’s memory and to reiterate urgent demands for safety interventions along the highway. The vigil highlighted the growing risks faced by students and residents alike and served as a call to action for authorities to implement lasting protective measures.

With the incident capturing national attention, Dumelo’s commitment to immediate safety improvements is expected to become a central focus for both local officials and community stakeholders as they work to prevent further loss of life along the N1 corridor.
