The fourteen (14) member Ethiopian delegation on a study visit to Ghana says the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is an ideal system worth emulating.
The delegation spent five days exploring the NHIS operations and achievements, especially Case-Based Payment and how the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) transitioned its Payment System to adopt the Ghana Diagnostic Related Groupings (G-DRG).
As part of the visit, the delegation visited the NHIA Claims Processing Centre (CPC) at Dzorwulu, the NHIA Ayawaso District Office, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ridge Hospital, Ga East Hospital, and the Christian Health Association of Ghana.
In the end, the team lead, a Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency, Neam Ismace Serice, thanked the NHIA and Ministry of Health Executive Management for their enthusiastic support.
‘There is no doubt Ghana comes first in health insurance since countries such as Nigeria, Liberia, and Cameroun have understudied the Scheme.”
The Korea Foundation for International Health (KOFIH) sponsored the trip as sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO).
During the preliminary, the NHIA’s Director in charge of the Research, Policy, Monitoring, and Evaluation Directorate, Dr. Francis Asenso-Boadi, chaired the briefing session at the Head Office.
He said Executive Management was proud and committed to helping organizations seeking to tap from the Scheme’s experience.
The NHIA Ag. Director, Strategic Health Purchasing Directorate, Dr. (Mrs.)  Ruby A. Mensah Annan gave an overview of the NHIS background and objectives, the Benefit Package, Medicine tariffs, Claims payments, international collaborations, donor support, and the way forward.
