A senior aide to former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some prison inmates attempted to poison the politician while he was serving his sentence.

Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah made the disclosure on Tuesday, October 27, during an interview with Sammie Wiafe on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, as the embattled politician marked his 100th day in prison.

According to Dr Boakye Danquah, Wontumi informed him about the alleged incident when they met in court on Tuesday. He added that prison authorities had initiated investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported attempt.

“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.

The presidential and political aide further explained that inquiries were underway to determine whether the allegation was supported by evidence.

He said he had personally contacted the prison commander, who assured him that the matter had been referred for investigation and that further information would be provided once the necessary inquiries had been completed.

“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” Dr Boakye Danquah added.

However, he did not disclose further details about the alleged incident, identify the inmates purportedly involved or indicate what might have motivated the reported attempt.

The allegation has not been independently verified, and no findings from the reported investigation have been made public.

Beyond the alleged security concern, Dr Boakye Danquah reiterated Wontumi’s call for comprehensive reforms within Ghana’s prison system, with particular emphasis on rehabilitation, the welfare of inmates and their successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.

Wontumi is serving a 20 year prison sentence following his conviction for permitting mining operations on his Samreboi concession without the approval of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The former regional party chairman is challenging both his conviction and sentence before the Court of Appeal and is seeking temporary release while the appeal process continues.

The reported poisoning allegation has introduced a further concern surrounding his incarceration, although the circumstances remain unclear pending the outcome of the investigation.
