Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has formally announced a major change in his legal representation in the ongoing criminal proceedings against him, appointing seasoned lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as his new Lead Defence Counsel.

The decision follows the exit attempt of his previous lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, who had indicated his intention to withdraw from the case, citing evolving legal and procedural considerations linked to the trial.

Although Mr Appiah Kubi filed an application before the High Court seeking permission to step down from his role, the request was ultimately dismissed. The court upheld a preliminary objection raised by the Attorney General, ruling that the application was procedurally defective on the basis that legal practitioners are not required to obtain judicial approval before discontinuing representation.

Chairman Wontumi’s decision to reorganise his defence team was made public in an official statement issued on Monday, June 15. In the statement, he explained that the appointment of new counsel followed extensive consultation and was made in full exercise of his constitutional entitlement to legal representation of his own choosing.

He further emphasised that the move is intended to ensure that his defence is presented comprehensively, effectively and strictly within the framework of the law.

In his own words, he stated that he, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, wished to respectfully notify the court, all parties involved and the general public that he had appointed Honorable Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as his new Lead Defence Counsel in the ongoing criminal proceedings. He explained that the decision was taken after careful consultation and in line with his constitutional right to select his legal representatives.

He added that the objective of the change is to guarantee a robust and properly structured defence as the case advances. He also extended appreciation to his former legal team for their service and dedication throughout the proceedings, stressing that the decision should not be interpreted as any criticism of their competence or professional commitment, but rather as a lawful exercise of his right to determine his legal representation.

Chairman Wontumi reiterated that every accused person is entitled to adequate legal defence and maintained that the restructuring of his legal team is aimed at strengthening his position as the case proceeds.

He also acknowledged the seriousness of the charges before the court and reaffirmed his resolve to defend himself through due process under the law. He stressed the principle of the presumption of innocence, insisting that he remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court and that the responsibility rests entirely on the prosecution to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the statement, Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea is expected to immediately assume full responsibility for the defence team. His initial duties will include a comprehensive review of all court records, assessment of prior proceedings and the filing of any necessary legal applications or submissions to ensure the protection of his client’s right to a fair hearing.

Chairman Wontumi further expressed confidence in the judicial process and called on the public, as well as all stakeholders, to refrain from speculation and allow the case to proceed strictly on the basis of law and evidence rather than public opinion or conjecture.

The development marks a significant shift in the legal strategy of the high profile case as proceedings continue before the court.
