Renowned journalist, Kofi Adomah Nwanwani is receiving urgent medical treatment in Dubai to restore sight in one
of his eyes.
This follows an accidental shooting incident at a funeral in Dormaa in the Bono Region last week.
The accident occurred during the firing of musketry by some chiefs at the traditional event.
According to sources close to the Kofi TV CEO, Kofi Adomah was repositioning himself when gunpowder from
one of the guns, which had just been fired, struck his face.
The incident caused severe injury to one of his eyes, leaving him unable to see.
The journalist’s other eye was also affected, resulting in blurry vision.
Initial medical attention was provided in Ghana before his transfer to Dubai for specialized treatment. He’s now in Dubai seeing to restoring the one blurry eye. But it looks like the other one cannot see again,"
the source added.
The Daily Searchlight is extremely saddened and outraged by this incident. We believe that it is necessary that the
police conduct criminal investigations into how a gun was discharged in what was a crowded situation.
It is often the case that gunfire and musketry are let off during funerals for notables in Ghana. This reckless practice
has come to be referred to as ‘culture and tradition’. It is hard to understand how people, who traditionally did not
use guns, and who have never had widespread knowledge about the manufacture and use of guns and muskets,
concluded, somehow, that discharging musketry is part of their tradition.
This is a practice many have often criticized in the past, and we hope that this unfortunate incident will begin
some kind of debate on this practice.
We believe that the firing of muskets at funerals should be banned. And anybody wishing to do so for any occasion
should be required to procure a police permit, with provisions on the safety standards to be applied.
And most definitely, the firing of musketry in crowd situations should be banned and sanctioned by law.
We wish Kofi Adomah well, and pray that he can regain vision in both his eyes.
(Editorial of the Daily Searchlight of Monday, 20th January 2025).
WE SHOULD END THIS RECKLESS PRACTICE WE REFER TO AS ‘CULTURE AND TRADITION’!
