Many students at the University of Education, Winneba are complaining about the high-handed manner authorities at the school are handling affairs, particularly with regard to fee collection.

The state that the decision by the school to shut the student registration portal, when many have not finished paying, would have an adverse effect on the school.

It is estimated that as much as forty-nine (49%) of students in the school have either not paid, or have paid but have as yet not registered on the portal.

Making the situation worse is the case of the Level 100 students. The government is reported to have promised to pay their fees fully, but this is yet to materialize.

Meanwhile the authorities have shut down the portal and have reportedly told those yet to register to go home.

There were reports that hundreds of students were turned away from examination centres yesterday. Mid- semester examination is currently taking place on campus.

Speaking to the Daily Searchlight yesterday, students stated that some students have fully paid their school fees but could not access the portal to register.

Others too are reported not have finished paying. Some at Level 100 too are reported to have paid, whist others were waiting on the government to make good its promise.

“Since yesterday the university have closed the portal. So those students who are unable to register they are sacking them. About 49% of the student population are affected,” they lamented.

“All the Level 100 students who are to get the scholarship from the government too have been blocked. Some went to write the mid-sem today and they were denied access to the centers,” the students stated.

The students warned that the level of agitation on campus was rising, and there could be a demonstration.

Meanwhile the students have circulated an online petition calling on the school to reopen the portal

(Below is the petition).

UEW Student Petition – Reopen Registration & Suspend Deactivation

We, concerned students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), are petitioning management to reopen the registration portal and suspend the immediate deactivation of students affected by unexpected fee increases, system challenges, and lack of prior notice.

This petition is meant to highlight the challenges many of us face, especially those who have paid part or full fees but could not register due to portal issues, scholarship delays, or fee adjustments.

By signing, you add your voice to a collective call for fairness, understanding, and the reopening of registration for a short grace period. Let’s work together to protect academic access and student welfare.
